Emmy LiveBlog!

By: Dani Dornfeld at 7:47 pm

Welcome to SpecTV’s Emmy LiveBlog. Winners and losers and snarky comments for the next three plus hours.

And that’s the show.

Well, they actually ended with a disclaimer about how the voting works.

11:59 - Weren’t they supposed to show the clips that fans voted for? Favorite comedy clips and favorite drama clips? They made a really big deal about it. Hm, maybe if there was only one host, we would have gotten to see them.

10:56 - Mad Men wins! The crowd errupts! This is historic (first time a basic cable show has won Best Drama). And they’re right down to the wire (coincidentally, a show which was snubbed in its last season).

10:55 - Tom Selleck presents Outstanding Drama Series. Tom Selleck? Really?

10:53 - 30 Rock wins again! Tina Fey’s third award tonight. She bowed to Betty and Mary. That was really cute.

10:51 - Mary Tyler Moore is on stage! Betty White is celebrating her 60th year in television! She looks so… old. She gets a well deserved standing ovation. How great that the two of them are presenting Outstanding Comedy Series?

10:50 - Considering how they’re running out of time, they couldn’t have shortened this? Jeff Probst wins. That was anticlimactic.

10:49 - And they’re back. With the stupid, stupid jokes.

10:45 - The reality cliches are getting bad. Really really bad. Oh no they didn’t! They’re holding off until after the commercial break! That’s actually kind of clever.

10:43 - Host of a Reality Show. Cat Deeley was SNUBBED. What is Heidi Klum wearing?

10:41 - Tina Fey wins! And gives a shout out to Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

10:40 - Lead Actress, Comedy. This has been a weird night. I don’t know who’s going to win.

10:38 - Bryan Cranston. Wow. At least James Spader lost.

10:37 - Best Actor, Drama. By far, the most competitive category. I honestly have no idea what’ll happen.

10:32 - Commercial break. Big awards are up next.

10:29 - In Memoriam.

10:27 - Glenn Close wins for Damages! At least I got something right.

10:25 - And the Emmy goes to Alec Baldwin. They’re reaaaally rushing now. They have a lot to cover in the last hour.

10:24 - Candice Bergen’s father was the first President of the Television Academy. Interesting fact. And she’s presenting Lead Actor, Comedy. I want Lee Pace to win. He won’t, but it’d be nice.

10:23 - Paul Giamatti wins for John Adams. It’s his first Emmy win and nomination. I really don’t have anything snarky to say. He’s being cute, funny and charming.

10:15 - Writing for a Drama Series - all five nominees are cable shows. Hm. The Mad Men pilot wins! Matthew Weiner gives another cute writer speech.

10:14 - House got a directing award!

10:08 - Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Show - Don Rickles wins!

10:07 - Kristin and Neil Patrick Harris are back together! They don’t get to be funny (the show’s running long).

10:02 - John Adams wins Best Miniseries. Tom Hanks accepts the award from his Forrest Gump mom. How cute!

10:01 - Sally Field takes the stage!

10:00 - Don Rickles is the funniest thing about tonight’s show so far.

9:58 - Reality Competition. The Amazing Race wins again. It’s their sixth consecutive win.

9:56 - Now, this is the weirdest pairing. Kathy Griffith and Don Rickles. He gets a standing ovation. She’s yelling. He made a joke. How adorable. More jokes.

9:54 - Oh, more awards I’m ambivalent about.

9:53 - I didn’t disappear, the show got boring. Now the M*A*S*H set with Sandra Oh and Patrick Dempsey. That’s actually a little weird.

9:32 - “Decisions are made by those who show up.”

9:31 - Martin Sheen sitting behind the Oval Office desk in a fake West Wing set. And he made a joke about never winning an Emmy for the show. He’s talking about how everyone should vote.

9:30 - A WEST WING TRIBUTE (or something)!

9:24 - But Tina Fey won. Cute speech about being a writer though.

9:23 - Writing for a Comedy Series. If Bryan Fuller wins for the Pushing Daisies “Pie-lette” that would totally make my night!

9:21 - YAY! Barry Sonnenfeld wins Directing for a Comedy Series for the Pushing Daisies “Pie-lette.” I couldn’t be happier that this show won something! And they cut to Kristin Chenoweth and Lee Pace looking adorable and holding hands. His parting words, “Love TV and fear the Internet.”

9:21 - Both of Bartlet’s secretaries are onstage within 10 minutes.

9:19 - The saddest presentation couple ever. David Boreanaz and Lauren Conrad. This is depressing.

9:17 - The Daily Show wins!

9:14 - Aww! The cast of Laugh In is presenting the award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

9:13 - A “Sock it to me” medley in honor of the 40th anniversary since Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In premiered.

9:06 - Alec Baldwin is presenting! With weird glasses! Lead Actress, Miniseries or Movie. Laura Linney wins for John Adams. Shocker?

9:05 - That was tough to type. I may have missed one.

9:01 - Josh Groban sings a TV theme song medley. I’m excited! The Simpsons, Friends, Happy Days, The Golden Girls (LAUGH!), Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, The Andy Griffith Show, Love Boat, Law & Order, The Addams Family, The Muppet Show, The X Files, South Park (his non-opera voice is a little weird), The Jeffersons (complete with Gospel choir), Baywatch, The Brady Bunch, Cops, Fresh Prince of Bel Aire (Oh wow), Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Johnny Carson (Ed McMahon), Two and a Half Men, Gilligan’s Island, M*A*S*H*, The Carol Burnett Show, Cheers (Yay!).

8:56 - The Martin Scorsese - Tina Fey AmEx commercials are actually very funny. Even if there are like three different versions of it.

8:55 - “Truth is what you get other people to believe.”

8:54 - The first super-awkward political speech of the night. To loud applause.

8:53 - Rob Reiner was part of that staff? Wow.

8:52 - Aw, how cute! The academy is giving Tommy Smothers a commemorative Emmy because he never submitted his name the year they won.

8:50 - Steve Martin’s on stage. Talking about The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

8:49 - The Accountants! From Ernst & Young! Who have a neon sign in Times Square (which amuses me every time I’m there).

8:48 - Howie and Jeff are back. Ugh. I’m sick of the five host thing already.

8:47 - Yeah, that took a really long time. Colbert’s writing staff won. It’s very cute that he’s standing on the steps shaking hands with all of the writers as they come up to the stage.

8:45 - There are SO MANY writers being named. At least the reading is funny. Sort of.

8:44 - Hayden and Jennifer Love Hewitt presenting Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy series. If only one of the nominated writers had written their intro.

8:43 - Dianne Wiest for In Treatment. So now the three I really wanted to win have lost.

8:42 - He made a Katherine Heigl joke! About her being ungrateful!. Now, Supporting Actress, Drama. It’s nice that Rachel Griffiths is nominated in the supporting category this year.

8:41 - The Simpsons and Conan. I once met him on Broadway.

8:40 - YAY! A promo for Eli Stone! SO EXCITED!

8:36 - SHOCKER! The guy who is directing this Emmy broadcast won. Who would’ve thought?

8:35 - The first awards that no one cares about - Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Presentation. I’m rooting for Lonny Prince, the guy who directed the PBS Broadcast of Company. Which is still on my TiVo.

8:34 - Steve Carell is just staring at him. It’s really kind of funny. Gervais is tickling Steve Carell. Seriously? This is an awards show? And Ricky Gervais finally gets his Emmy.

8:33 - Gervais-Carell smackdown?

8:31 - Clip reel of Emmy acceptance speeches. Aw, including the one when S. Epetha Merkson lost her speech in her cleavage. And two Barbra speeches.

8:30 - Ricky Gervais talks about how he wasn’t here last year and still won. “Keep it short. Particularly if you’re not on-screen talent. No one wants to hear from a producer.”

8:29 - And the Emmy goes to… Zeljko Ivanec (yup, I spelled that right). Again, no one saw this coming. Maybe it the Emmys aren’t 100% predictable.

8:28 - Supporting Actor, Drama. Sadness! There was a picture of John Spencer.

8:27 - It’s sort of weird that there’s a “tribute” thingy to Desperate Housewives considering the show IS STILL ON. And here’s the whole cast of women. On a living room set.

8:26 - Jeff Probst looks like he can’t believe Heidi Klum kissed him. They didn’t rehearse?

8:25 - It’s back!

8:22 - I’m 0 for 2 in should win. I’m like .5 for 2 with will win. This is sad. I remember having the same thing happen last year. Hm.

8:21 - At least she made a joke. Okay, but now she’s just listing people. And here’s the music.

8:20 - Jean Smart?! Really? No one (and I mean no one) saw that coming.

8:19 - Supporting Actress, Comedy. I want Kristin to win!

8:18 - It’s really cute that they’re showing pictures of past winners before the nominees.

8:17 - Julia Louis-Dreyfus takes the stage. Wouldn’t it have been better to have the whole cast?

8:16 - Oh, it’s back! So, to celebrate the 60th year, they’re showing clips and using mock sets from classic shows. First up, the Seinfeld Diner (and because it’s just the inside, I’m not going to call it Tom’s). Great clip from The Contest.

8:13 - The opening was really… awkward? Sort of rushed, and trying to be funnier than it was. It’s hard to tell exactly why it didn’t work.

8:12 - Commercial Break. Excuse me while I cry over Neil Patrick Harris’ loss.

8:11 - First Emmy. Jeremy Piven, Entourage. It’s his third consecutive win. Why do they call this awards show predictable again? And I’m really annoyed he won.

8:10 - Why is Jon Cryer nominated as supporting? The show is called TWO and a Half Men.

8:09 - Tina Fey and a VERY PREGNANT Amy Poehler (who made a Eva Longoria joke) to present Supporting Actor, Comedy.

8:08 - Here comes William Shatner. Oh, so she is wearing less. I can’t believe William Shatner just ripped Heidi Klum’s clothes off.

8:07 - The first Howie Mandel hand shaking joke.

8:06 - Heidi Klum looks confused. And now she looks bored.

8:05 - They’re really awkward. There’s this forced “we have nothing prepared” bit. And the first Sarah Palin joke of the evening!

8:04 - WHY DID THEY PUT HEIDI KLUM IN A TUX?!

8:03 - And there are five hosts. The nominees for Reality TV Host. Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel and Ryan Seacrest.

8:02 - It’s nice that they’ve gone back to the traditional stage for the Emmys. Last year it was in the round, and was incredibly awkward to watch.

8:01 - Oprah! In Primetime! It’s the 60th Emmys!

8:00 - Awwww, the stars are saying their favorite tv lines. Award for most overacted - Hayden Panettiere.

7:45 - T minus fifteen minutes. The pre-show is a little dull, but Lee Pace was adorable in his interview.
